Are you exhausted? Burnt out? Stressed?
Not just
"I need more sleep" tired. I mean deeply, biologically drained. When
you are burnt out, your brain feels like it is experiencing loadshedding, but
the lights are on. You know where everything is and what you need to do, but your
power is just off.
You’ve
probably tried more sleep, meditation, or attended another self-help workshop. But
when you are already overwhelmed, adding "self-care goals" to your
to-do list feels like more work.
Are your
current “fixes” ineffective? Here is a totally different approach: make
something ugly.
The Golden
Rule: Permission to Be Awful
The biggest
barrier to creative healing is perfectionism. Perfectionism is just
stress edited in TikTok.
To make creative
healing work for your mental health, you have to promise yourself that
whatever you create will be completely useless, totally unsellable, and
aggressively ugly. You are not trying to build a side hustle here; you are
trying to give your nervous system a desperate break.
The Brain
Science of "Ugly" Creativity
When you
are stressed, your brain is trapped in a hyper-survival state, constantly
worrying about productivity, what-ifs, and performance.
Engaging in
process art (creativity where the final product does not matter) bypasses
your default mode network (logical brain). In fact, neuroscientists have found
that making art lowers cortisol (the stress hormone) in roughly 75% of people,
regardless of their artistic skill.
If you are
shouting at the screen right now that you do not have a creative bone in your
body, perfect! That is exactly why we are making something ugly.
Process art
works because it charms your mind into a gentle, meditative zone, deactivates
your brain’s default mode network. Finally, the exact region responsible for
overthinking, worrying, and contemplation is switched off.
Three
Low-Effort Creative Resets
When you
have zero energy left, do not try to learn fine art. Instead, try these
micro-journaling activities that require zero talent and less than 10 minutes:
- The 5-Minute Scribble Dump: Take a plain piece of paper and a dark pen. Close your eyes for 30 seconds, feel the tension in your shoulders, and scribble aggressively. Press hard. Make a mess. Do not think. Rip it up when you are done to release trapped somatic stress physically.
- The Colour Smudge: Grab a cheap pack of
kids' watercolour paints or oil pastels. Do not draw real objects.
Instead, focus entirely on the physical sensation of moving the colour
across the page. Blend purple into green, smudge the edges, and focus on
the colours and your movement. Repeat with different colours.
- The Playlist Colour-Travel: Build a three-song
playlist of nostalgic tracks you love. Pick three colours that match the feeling
of those songs. Put on your headphones, close your eyes to feel the music,
and let the pen or brush move to the rhythm. Nostalgic music triggers
dopamine and signals safety to a fried nervous system.
Process
Over Product
Creativity
is a powerful tool for coping with tough emotions, reducing anxiety, and building
mental resilience. The best part is that you do not need to be an artist to enjoy
the rewards.
Take five
minutes tonight to do something purely for the process, not the product. Your body
will thank you.

will you be trying first? Comment below and describe your useless, unsellable,
and beautifully ugly creations! 😊
